How important is vulnerability in art?
For me, art is not a mirror, its not an illusion of what I am, its a tool to try to find the open heart without defenses, as real and bloody as possible. Thats why, Im so interested and challenged by art, because sometimes I resist, my unconscious hides things about myself, its difficult for me to make public what I consider deeply intimate, and its difficult for me to open my life. There, art helps me to see it in front of my face and create with that. I also need help from other tools for that: therapies such as Lacanian psychoanalysis, philosophical writings and readings, rituals, traveling, exposing myself to the uncertain, loving and having my heart broken, etc. everything that opens me to the places where I dont know who I am, from there I make art and then I expose that vulnerable work to the public.
Art as a way of life focuses on three challenges of vulnerability: how capable I am of seeing myself (and the world though me), how capable I am of expressing it, and how capable I am of being seen. They are spiritual challenges that require integrity in the being, it needs psychological, emotional and physical balances to handle the chaos of these sensitive explorations. In that sense, art requires one of the greatest commitment to oneself, in relation to training health towards new freedoms.
The deep path to vulnerability always goes with the question: How much truth are you able to handle? No one knows. Its the risk where, while one discover new beauties, also there is the chance to fall into the abysses of oneself. Vulnerability in art is fundamental, and even more is to stay healthy and train spiritual muscles for this path, to see, to fall, and being able to create with what it comes.
